Homer B. Smith Jr. “Hoppy”, a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend passed away September 13, 2017 in Lansing. Homer was born June 8, 1931 in Martin, Kentucky to the late Homer and Anna (Crisp) Smith. He was retired from the Michigan Army National Guard as a Chief Warrant Officer. Homer loved hosting family and neighborhood gatherings at his home and especially looked forward to the annual horseshoe tournament that was held each New Year's Day. He was a great cook and looked forward to having family and friends spend time with one another around the meal. Many may remember Hoppy from Cugino’s Restaurant in Grand Ledge, where he was a regular known as “Smitty.” He is survived by his wife of over sixty years, Gina (Fama); daughters, Sherry (Brent) Alberts, Patti Weber and Leah (Rocky) Juarez; grandchildren, Nathan, Amy, Gina, Maria, Toni and Dominic; sisters, Madeline Nichols, Anita (Charlie) White, Jackie (Cecil) Welch and Reita Kay (Rick) Williams along with numerous nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, September 16, 2017, 10:30 a.m. at St. Gerard Catholic Church, Lansing. Rite of Committal will follow at Hillside Cemetery, Delta Twp. Following the committal the family would like to invite everyone to a memorial luncheon at Royal Scot, 4722 W. Grand River Avenue, Lansing, Michigan 48906. Visitation on Friday from 3:00-8:00 p.m. at the Holihan-Atkin-Barclay Funeral Home, Grand Ledge and from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church Saturday. Memorial contributions may be given to the Veterans Support Center Michigan Chapter, 44444 Mound Road, Suite 100, Sterling Heights, Michigan 48314.
