Russell Gordon Waters April 8, 1954 – July 16, 2026 Russell Gordon Waters, 72, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2026. Russ dedicated nearly 40 years of service to the State of Michigan, where he built a career defined by hard work, integrity, and a commitment to serving others. He was also deeply involved in his union, advocating for his fellow employees and believing strongly in standing up for what was right. Outside of work, Russ was a devoted Detroit sports fan. Whether it was cheering on the Lions, Tigers, or Red Wings, he rarely missed an opportunity to support his teams. Above all, however, he was a Spartan at heart and proudly rooted for Michigan State whenever they took the field or court. While Russ never had children of his own, he embraced the role of stepfather with love and dedication. He became a steady presence, a source of support, and a father figure whose impact will be felt for generations. His greatest joy in life came from his grandchildren, who were truly the light of his life. Nothing made him happier than watching them grow, celebrating their accomplishments, and simply spending time together. Russ was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Michele Waters, with whom he shared a loving life and partnership. As well as his parents, Lenore and Robert Waters. He is survived by his stepchildren, Kimm Waldo (Eric Giles) and Jason Waldo (Taylor Bertelsen); his cherished grandchildren, Emma, Arabel, Jase, Kade, and David; his sister, Beverly (Thomas) Ahlbeck; his nephew, Matthew (Emily) Ahlbeck; and many extended family members and dear friends who will miss his stoic strength, unwavering loyalty, and generous heart. Russ will be remembered for his steadfast character, his devotion to family, and the countless ways he showed up for the people he loved. His legacy is one of kindness, dependability, and unconditional love. Though he will be deeply missed, those who knew him find comfort in believing he has been reunited with the love of his life. A visitation will be held on July 28 from 12pm-2pm at Holihan-Atkin-Barclay Funeral Home in Grand Ledge, followed by a memorial service at 2pm.
