Mary Catherine Gilpin

Mary Catherine Gilpin, 101, of Eagle, Michigan, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born on October 11, 1923, in Detroit, Michigan, Mary was the daughter of the late John N. and Marina (Alberti) Sepeter. A dedicated accountant, Mary spent her career at the State of Michigan, Office on Aging, where her attention to detail and commitment to public service earned her the respect and admiration of her colleagues. She was not only a professional but a beloved mother and grandmother, nurturing her family with love, creativity, and a spirit of adventure. Mary’s life was marked by her artistic talents where she expressed herself through various forms of art. Her imagination was matched only by her resourcefulness, a trait that played a significant role in her love story. She met her husband, Robert, when he stopped to help her fix her stalled vehicle, driven by the sight of two legs sticking out from beneath the car. Their marriage flourished for 39 cherished years until his death in 1991. Outside of her professional life, Mary found joy in gardening, camping, and caring for her many farm animals and pets, particularly her cherished dog, Skittles. Her warm heart and nurturing spirit will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Mary was a beloved wife and a proud mother to her four wonderful children: JP (Katie) O'Brien, Ginger (James) Esch, Debbie (Luis) Lupnitz, and Robert G. (Judy) Gilpin. Her legacy will live on through her cherished grandchildren: Heather (Russell) Curtis, Shaughn O'Brien, John Esch, Steve Esch, Stacy (Gydeon) Gilzow, April (Jake Listvan) Lupnitz, and Andrew (Rebecca) Lupnitz; step-granddaughter, Sara (Brandon) DeLeon; great-grandchildren: Kira, Corinne, Emily, Abbi, Tytus; Benni, Eli;. Mary also had a close-knit relationship with her extended family, including her beloved nieces and nephews, Robert (Lisa) Sepeter, Linda(George) Greanias, Carl (Lisa) Sepeter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert in 1991and brother, Gust Sepeter. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the wonderful McLaren Hospice team for their compassionate care during her final days, especially to Candy RN, Nancy RN, Jill LPN, Katrina, CNA, and all the staff who provided comfort and support. In honor of Mary’s life and contributions to her family and community, a private graveside service will be held at Wacousta Cemetery, Watertown Township, Clinton County, Michigan. Mary’s legacy is one of love, creativity, and resilience, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
