Karen Sue Schulert

It is with heavy hearts that we announce, on February, 18, 2025 Karen Sue Schulert, age 78, passed away at home surrounded by her loving family after a long and valiant battle against a multitude of health conditions which included cancer and heart disease. Her strength and resilience were particularly evident during the past eight months as she faced numerous subsequent complications with unwavering courage. Born on December 22, 1946 in Charlotte, MI, daughter of Rosemary and Herbert "Bud" Rasmussen. A lifelong resident of Grand Ledge, MI, Karen married David E. Schulert in 1965 and worked as a secretary for Oldsmobile for four years until she started their family. She was a vital partner in establishing her husband's plumbing & heating business in Mulliken, MI., while raising their two children. As her children grew, she went to work part-time for Scott T. Stevenson, DDS until her and Dave's divorce in 1990. At that time, she embarked on a full-time executive assistant career for Michigan Livestock Exchange eventually retiring from Associated General Contractors in 2016. Karen reconnected and found happiness with her life partner, Ed Lumbert, where they enjoyed traveling (especially road trips), playing games and spending their past eight winters in Bullhead City, AZ. Karen enjoyed the simple things such as her love of flowers, a good book, shopping (especially shoes), puzzles and a lively game of cards or board games. In her younger years she was active in bowling, golf, socializing with many friends and family vacations. The true joy of Karen's life were her grandchildren. Karen had a great sense of style, an infectious laugh, a flair for relieving memories, and the love of a good cookie -- her smile would light up a room. She is survived by her son David Mark (Dawn) Schulert, daughter Jennifer (Schulert) Lopez, granddaughter's Elizabeth (Donny Hadden) Schulert, Rebecca Schulert, and grandson David Jakob Schulert, sister Kellie (Dan) Brown, nephew's Matt Brown, Donnie Rassmussen as well as many extended relatives. Karen is preceded in death by her grandparents Clyde and Sadie (Woodman) Lynd, parents Rosemary (Lynd) Rasmussen, Herbert "Bud" Rasmussen, and brother Kerry Lee Rasmussen. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2025 at Oneida Gospel Church in Grand Ledge, MI at 12-noon, with a luncheon immediately following. Visitation will commence at 11 a.m., one hour prior to the service.
